Climate fit
Summers
July average high 88.0°F at Concord Buchanan Field (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). Cooling capacity matters, and attic ducts get hot.
Winters
Mild winters, well within the range where air-source heat pumps heat efficiently (DOE).
Home age and ducts
Lamorinda's typical home was built around 1960; Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Concord homes cluster in the early 1970s; Danville and Clayton homes are newer, from the 1980s. Older homes often have leaky ducts in attics or crawlspaces, which a change-out duct test will expose. Homes with no ducts are good candidates for ductless mini-splits.
Noise and placement
- Keep the outdoor unit away from bedroom windows and neighbors' living spaces
- Confirm side- and rear-yard setbacks and noise limits with the building department; rules vary by city
- Keep the line set as short as practical; the manufacturer's manual sets the maximum
- Leave clearance for airflow and service on all sides
- Check HOA rules (Blackhawk, Diablo, Rossmoor mutuals) before you sign
Panel capacity
Heat pumps and heat pump water heaters each typically need a 240V circuit. A 100A panel may still work after a load calculation, or it may need an upgrade. Ask the installer to check early, and see our sister site's panel upgrade guide if it comes up.
Solar
A heat pump adds electric load that rooftop solar can offset. If you want MCE's rebate, it has a 12-month rule on adding solar, batteries or EV charging; details on the rebates page.
Next step
If you have a furnace and AC, start with furnace to heat pump. For prices, see the cost guide.
Fit questions
Do heat pumps work in hot weather?
Yes. Cooling is the same refrigeration cycle as a central AC. In Walnut Creek, where July highs average 88°F (NOAA, Concord), correct sizing and sealed ducts matter more than the type of system.
How far from the house can a heat pump be?
The manufacturer's installation manual sets maximum line-set length and height difference; longer runs can need extra refrigerant and cost some efficiency. Placement also has to meet your city's setback and noise rules.
Are heat pumps loud?
Modern variable-speed outdoor units are generally quiet, but placement matters: keep the unit away from bedroom windows and property lines, and check city noise rules.
Can I pair a heat pump with solar?
Yes. A heat pump adds electric load that solar can offset. If you plan to use MCE's rebate, note its 12-month rules around adding solar or batteries.
